Lake Wedowee is one of the most pristine lakes in the United States and is located in the central eastern part of Alabama within 90 minutes of the Atlanta market and the Birmingham market. Completed in 1982 as an Alabama Power Company reservoir Lake Wedowee has more than 272 miles of shoreline and covers approximately 10,660 acres in area. Lake Wedowee, also known as R.L. Harris Lake, was named in honor of Rother L. “Judge” Harris, an Alabama Power director and vice president of electric operations who retired in 1968 after 45 years of service. The R.L. Harris Dam has two 67,500-kilowatt generators and is 1,142 feet in length and is over 150 feet high at its tallest point.
